A while back I went on a two-week vacation to The Netherlands. Lol, I now vacation in the place where I used to live. I haven’t posted anything about my trip yet, so here we go…
It was June 18, 2016. After a surprisingly comfy, 8hr flight, I arrived to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Wow, it had been almost 2 years since I’ve been there. The original plan was to!! surprise my 2 best friends with my visit, but Michelle already knew. So the new plan was to surprise Mekdes. Boy, was I looking forward to that! I had been waiting for weeks, if not months, to see the surprised look on her face as I would suddenly be in her room. BUT NO, the joke was on me! Someway, somehow Mekdes got to know that I would come, so I was completely shocked to see both Michelle and Mekdes waiting for me at the airport, with the cutest balloon!! Of course, tears of happiness were shed; I couldn’t believe I was actually here!
After being reunited with my Mom and friends, everything hit me. I’ve been away for 2 years, my whole life has changed and up until that moment I guess I didn’t really realize that. It felt kind of weird, as if I was in some sort of dream. I hadn’t seen my friends ever since I left and all of the sudden they were right in front of me; unreal. The reason for my visit was to celebrate my 21st birthday. And it was most definitely well celebrated! I feel so blessed to have such good and real people around me, who support and love me. I’m forever grateful!
Though I grew up in The Netherlands and lived there all my life, I went through a few emotions while being there. This is what basically went through my head the entire time:
• O M G it’s so cold!
Why are these people walking around in T-Shirts without jackets!? This is insanity. These people are crazy and I’m freezing, someone give me a cup of hot cocoa ASAP!
• What is that smell?
Is it the grass? Is it the bird poop? Or is this what frozen, fresh air always smelled like?
• Cycling is a nightmare!!!
My bum wasn’t made for this. I don’t recall the saddle being this hard and painful. Did I actually ride this thing all those years?
• Wow, these houses are bo-ring
Where is the colour in these buildings? Oh gosh, the neighbors might hear me ’cause their house is attached to ours. And nooooo…. STAIRS
• A million layers
Socks, jackets, scarfs… okay maybe not a million layers, but definitely more than what I’m used to now. I miss my sandals…..
• Clothes … Cheap clothes
Look at this, and this and THIS. Finally some good-quality and affordable fashion, YASS! Maybe I should consider moving back to NL. *exits the store and goes into the cold* Ok, never mind.
I think you can tell that Holland isn’t quite my thing, lol. But, as any country, there are plenty of good traits! A blog post about that will be up pretty soon… Do you live/have ever been to The Netherlands? Let me know in the comments what you love or dislike about the country, I’m curious to know!
