About that time of year

About that time of year

Carnival season: it’s the most desired and anticipated time in the Latin and Caribbean countries. Here in Curaçao it all starts early, with the Jump-in and Jump-up parties, Tumba festival and the elections of the Kings and Queens of the Carnival. It’s a time where music and joy brings us all together and brings the biggest smile on our faces.

This year, Rubertico Benoni Balentien was crowned Tumba King with his Tumba: Nos Dos Ta Bati Bai, which you can listen to here. It was the song we would all be hearing non-stop during this years carnival. Tumba is one of the many cultural music styles of Curaçao, and though you hear it everywhere around carnival, it is rarely played during the rest of the year.

The parades are literally everything you’d expect them to be: music blasting so loud you’re bound to be deaf at the end of the day, food and BBQ’s everywhere, the most colorful costumes, a burning sun, and LOTS of ambiente!

I had the most amazing time and I cannot wait until next year, when I will hopefully participate in the parade as well!
